Solomon Islands has begun 16 days of activism against gender violence

Research released last year showed two thirds of Solomons women, aged 15 to 49, have suffered some form of physical or sexual abuse.

The Solomon Star reports the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Women, Youth Children and Family Affairs, Ethel Sigimanu, as saying the government has made some significant achievements in the last two years to end violence against women.

She says for the first time, the country has a national policy on eliminating violence against women, which she believes is the first in the region.
