Payroll problems at American Samoa's Education Department leads to changes

10:27 am on 20 November 2010

Changes will be made in the personnel office of the American Samoa Department of Education as a result of continuing payroll problems.

The director of education Dr Claire Poumele, says they won't fill any vacancies and will not be hiring any new teachers until they resolve the payroll issues.

As a result of teachers being absent from work because they have not received a paycheck for weeks and in some cases months, the department is sending management level personnel out to the schools to teach.

Many teachers are not turning up at work because they have not received a paycheck.

The governor, Togiola Tulafono, has promised to look into the reasons why the problems keep occurring but he says it appears the DOE payroll is being handled by inexperienced people.
