Some votes in Cook Islands election already cast

Some voters in the Cook Islands general election have already cast their votes.

The electoral office says three hundred postal ballots have been sent out for those overseas.

But voting has already also taken place on two outlying islands Nassau in the North and Palmerston in the south.

The Electoral Officer, Taggy Tangimetua, says efforts have been made to ensure good security:

"A fishing boat was chartered to take the vote, the voting papers. It was escorted by a police officer who did the management of the voting for them."

Ms Tangimetua says votes from those two islands have been transferred to islands with planes links and secured in local banks.
