Togiola calls for support for American Samoa canneries

The American Samoan Governor, Togiola Tulafono, has urged his directors to do everything they can to help the canneries because the tuna companies provide jobs for the territory.

He mentioned StarKist Samoa by name and told directors that if they have an opportunity to help the cannery in their positions as directors, then they should do so.

The governor noted that the workers at the lower end of the economic ladder are the ones whose jobs should be protected as they fuel the economy because most of them buy everything locally.

In comparison, those in the higher economic bracket tend to buy products from and spend their money off-island .

Togiola said it's important to help the canneries with their business as much as possible.
