Tonga commerce head predicts adjustment needed to democratic rule

7:00 pm on 2 November 2010

The president of the Tonga Chamber of Commerce, Paula Taumoepeau, says it will take a number of elections for Tonga to fully adjust to its new more democratic status.

The country goes to the polls in three weeks with the people having the ability to determine the government for the first time.

Mr Taumoepeau says businesses generally support the development but some have reservations.

"it's not a worry as much but I think it just being so new people are more aware of it but I think after we have gone through this process a couple of times it be just like normal. But I think because it's the very first time we are going through it just seems a bit strange and something out of the ordinary."
