Melanesian traditional knowledge workshop underway in Vanuatu

11:53 am on 21 October 2010

The first-ever workshop on Melanesian traditional knowledge is underway this week in Vanuatu's capital, Port Vila.

Melanesian Spearhead Group members are studying the feasibility of a reciprocal recognition and enforcement mechanism for Traditional Knowledge in Melanesia.

MSG Director General, Rima Ravusiro, says members are aware of various examples of misappropriation of traditional knowledge, and the lack of accrual benefits to its traditional owners.

He says they are examining an option for a collective approach to traditional knowledge governance and are looking at drafting legal text.

He says the system would be based on a national system of protection developed under the Pacific Regional Action Plan.
