Sandras lashes out at French Polynesia opposition

2:21 pm on 11 October 2010

One of French Polynesia's members of the French assembly, Bruno Sandras, has lashed out at the territory's opposition leaders, likening their threats to unseat the government to a crime.

Mr Sandras says suggestions by Gaston Flosse and Oscar Temaru that a motion of no confidence is imminent is part of a power struggle and not a fight for the common good.

His comments come as the government of Gaston Tong Sang struggles to muster a majority.

Mr Sandras says the administration has difficulty meeting its obligations and a change of government would incur further costs.

The French overseas territories minister, Marie Luce Penchard, is due in Tahiti this week to continue discussions about reforms to increase political stability.
