Three men have been shot dead and their bodies chopped to pieces in Papua New Guinea in an ongoing tribal fight that was sparked by a sorcery killing.

According to the Post Courier newspaper, Eastern Highlands police say the killings took place in Kompri during a dawn raid by an enemy tribe on Tuesday.

Police have deployed reinforcements to the area to contain the tribal violence and have cautioned motorists to be extra cautious because Kompri village is near the Highlands Highway.

They say the violence began early last month after a young woman was murdered over sorcery allegations.

They say thousands of kina worth of properties, including houses, food gardens and coffee trees have been destroyed in the conflict.
