Fiji phone companies struggle to meet registration deadline

Fiji's major phone companies say they won't be able to register all their customers before next week's deadline.

The Telephone Services Decree, which was issued in July, requires all phone users to register their details to allow bogus phone callers to be traced.

The manager corporate affairs at Vodafone, Shailendra Prasad, says about 75 to 80 percent of their clients have registered, but the problem is to get the information into their system in time.

"There is a substantial amount of work, even though we have like, you know, triple shifts of people actually imputting the data so we do have some backlog, but once we complete it then we will get a real picture of how many we have registered."

Shailendra Prasad says even though the company will limit services to unregistered customers, they will continue registration after the deadline to give people more time.
