5:43 pm on 16 September 2010

Residents of American Samoa have been shaken by an earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale.

Local radio stations reported their telephone lines were clogged with a huge volume of calls with people wanting information.

The National Weather Office in Pago Pago says there has been no word of any tsunami following the quake centered about 300 kilometres north of Neiafu in Tonga.

The tremor came less than two weeks before the one-year anniversary of the earthquake that spawned a tsunami and killed 34 residents in the territory.
