The Vanuatu opposition leader says the newly appointed commander of the para-military police, the Vanuatu Mobile Force, will prove to be competent.

Lieutenant Colonel Aru Maralau has been appointed as commander of the VMF.

The opposition leader Maxime Carlot Korman says he has known Mr Maralau for many years and believes he is well suited for the position.

"I think he will do a good job in the level of our mobile force unit inside our police in general. I think he will improve his responsibility. He will improve the effectiveness of the mobile force."

The VMF has been under scrutiny after a Coroner's report into the death of a prisoner last year criticised the force for placing itself above the law and having a culture of violence.
