Run-off proposed to end Cooks constituency rivalry

2:30 pm on 9 September 2010

The central executive of the Democratic Party in the Cook Islands says a standoff between two prospective candidates in the Rarotonga constituency of Ngatangiia should be settled with a run-off.

Mann Short is contesting the validity of the process by which the sitting MP and former Prime Minister, Sir Terepai Maoate, was nominated.

Mr Short's supporters say the nomination of Sir Terepai didn't follow party rules.

Sir Terepai, who has held the seat for 25 years, says he's prepared to stand down if Mr Short, a political newcomer, wins in a run-off.

The Cook Islands general elections are set for November the 17th.
