Solomons parliament elects Kemakeza as new speaker

4:51 pm on 8 September 2010

The Solomon Islands parliament has elected a former prime minister, Sir Allan Kemakeza, as the new speaker.

Sir Allan won the election by 27 votes, beating Francis Billy Hilly on 17 votes and Fred Fono, who secured four votes.

Sir Allan lost his Savo/Russell seat in last month's election.

However, the High Court had found last February that Sir Allan had been ineligible to contest last year's by-election which he won.

The by-election saw Sir Allan reclaim the seat he lost when he was sent to prison for six months in 2008 after a conviction for authorising militants to raid a law firm in 2002 when he was Prime Minister.
