1:11 pm on 3 September 2010

The founder and leader of the Samoa Democratic United Party, Asiata Saleimoa Va'ai has died in Apia, aged 65.

The MP for Satupa'itea passed away early this morning at the Tupua Tamasese Mea'ole hospital.

A nurse at the hospital says Asiata had first been admitted to the private Medcen hospital but was transferred to the national hospital yesterday.

Our correspondent, Autagavaia Tipi Autagavaia, says Asiata, who's reported to have suffered from several health complications, will be greatly missed.

"Asiata is also known as one of the prominent lawyers, he's got his private law firm and he became a member of parliament for the constituency of Satupa'itea for two consecutive terms. I understand he was also one of the very unique and very intelligent MPs. Now he's passed away, everyone will feel for Asiata's family at this very sad time."
