Chinese navy makes first Vanuatu visit

The Chinese Navy is visiting Vanuatu for the first time.

The training vessel, the Zhenghe, and the frigate, Bian Yang, with hundreds of sailors, will be berthed in Port Vila for several days.

The Acting Internal Affairs Minister, Joe Natuman, says the visit follows a request by the Prime Minister, Edward Natapei, during a visit to Beijing earlier this year, that ships be sent to mark the country's 30th annniversary of independence.

Rear Admiral Leng Zhenqing says they have brought greetings from the government and people of China to the government and people of Vanuatu.

The training vessel will be open to the public throughout tomorrow.
