American Samoan Government called on to keep to its budget

1:34 pm on 12 August 2010

American Samoa Senator, Velega Savali, says its high time the budget law was strictly followed to stop overspending of government funds.

Velega was commenting on Treasurer Magalei Logovii's letter to the Fono leaders that there were only enough funds to cover one more payroll.

Velega, who's a former Treasurer, says he fully supports moves to get every agency to follow their approved budgets, the Fono included.

But he asks why the Treasurer is only acting now.

Velega says when he was Treasurer he recommended that the Fono be in charge of its own budget as this would be one way to make the Legislature responsible for its own finances.
