6-point-4 quake off PNG coast

8:46 am on 5 August 2010

A strong 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck deep off the coast of Papua New Guinea yesterday.

Seismologists say no Pacific Ocean tsunami was triggered nor any damage reported.

The US Geological Survey says the quake was 110 kilometres southeast of Madang, a province on the northern coast of mainland PNG.

No physical damage or injuries from the deep tremble were reported and experts say it was not quite large enough to have sparked a tsunami.
