Fiji's interim Prime Minister says he regrets the jobs that may be lost if the Fiji Times newspaper is forced to shut down by a new government policy, but he insists the company brought it on itself.
September 28th is the deadline for media outlets to only have ten percent foreign shares under the interim regime's media decree.
The Fiji Times is 100 percent owned by Australia's News Limited, and has been put on the market following the decree.
Commodore Frank Bainimarama told the ABC's Foreign Correspondent he is disappointed.
"Because there will be a lot of job losses, but as I have continuously said, that's not my doing. That was the doing of the management. They've never acknowledged me as Prime Minister of this nation, even though I've been Prime Minister for the last 4 years. It's really not that, but what I am saying is that they are not doing the right thing by the people of this nation."
