There is a visible security presence in Honiara on the morning of the national general election.
The police say they are not expecting any significant trouble but there are suggestions that tensions could run high in the capital later today.

"Police and officers from the Regional Assistance Mission are visiting polling booths and patrolling the streets of Honiara. The police say they have plans in place to deal with any security situation but they have received no intelligence to suggest there will be any significant incidents. However there are reports there could be tension in Honiara because of concerns of non-residents being brought in to vote in the West Honiara constituency but at present the capital appears calm and reports from the provinces indicate a trouble free start to the election."
