Tonga customs clamp down on fake goods

The Customs and Trade Division of the Ministry for Revenue in Tonga says an operation clamping down on counterfeit, under-valued, or misdescribed goods is proving successful.

The Minister for Revenue, Sione Teisina Fuko, says through Operation Bullet, customs officials have intercepted about seven containers of counterfeit and falsely labelled goods.

He says the seized goods are worth over 160 thousand US dollars.

"For example, rice bags which say forty kilos outside but actually it's not forty kilos. And sports stuff and water which is not labelled in Tongan or in English. They are labelled in other languages. And sunglasses and perfume."

Sione Teisina Fuko says the majority of goods have arrived by ship from China.
