Fiji's social welfare secretary says retirees are not entitled to assistance if they use up their money from the national provident fund.

Govind Sami told the Fiji Sun retirees are turning to the Social Welfare Department for assistance after using up funds they had capitalised on retirement.

He says they use excuses about paying for their children's education, but the reality is they have chosen to withdraw all their money at once.

Mr Sami says all retirees that have asked for assistance have been turned away.

He says social welfare assistance is only provided to the extremely poor, including the aged, those who have lost a spouse, or single mothers.
