A climate change scientist from Papua New Guinea says progress is being made on plans for combatting a severe drought expected to hit the country around 2012.
In May, scientists at PNG's National Agriculture Research Institute or NARI, held a forum to raise awareness about the possibility of drought and how to prepare for it.
Its project leader for Climate Change and Drought Preparedness, Dr Rama Krishna, says work is being done to identify the most vulnerable places in order to set up resource centres.
"These resource centres will become the hubs of activity in terms of supplying the drought-solving material like potato, casava, taro, yam and some beans and other crops. And to communicate information. We will be providing them with information in terms of brochures and how to handle the drought."
Dr Rama Krishna says steps towards setting up a taskforce to create a national drought preparedness policy is also advancing.
