The Australian Opposition is planning to hold discussions with Nauru's Foreign Minister about reopening a centre on the island for the offshore processing of asylum seekers.
The Australian Government has ruled out re-opening the centre, which operated for seven years under the Howard Government as the main element of its so called Pacific Solution.
The Sydney Morning Herald says the Government is still pushing to convince East Timor to allow the establishment of a regional detention centre there, saying negotiations with Nauru are a waste of time because of the ongoing political stalemate.
But the Opposition has made no secret of its interest in the Nauru camp and its deputy leader, Julie Bishop, and immigration spokesman, Scott Morrison, will meet Dr Kieren Keke in Brisbane to discuss re-opening it.
