Vanuatu plans a yam festival

7:15 pm on 21 July 2010

Preparations for the northern Vanuatu town of Luganville to host its first ever yam festival are underway.

The researcher in the Vanuatu Agricultural Research Centre in Luganville, Roger Malapa, says the idea is to highlight the results of his 11 years of research into yams.

He says he's developed over 60 hybrid varieties with greater nutritional value than traditional yams.

Mr Malapa says the festival, in August, will be a chance for local farmers to demonstrate the results they are now achieving with the these new varieties.
