Tensions between two rival clans in the south of New Caledonia appear to have eased, with no more reports of violence.
Guns were fired and fires lit during violent clashes near Yate, following the appointment of a new tribal chief.
Our correspondent, Patrick Decloitre, reports that police cordoned off the area to stop the fighting and establish a dialogue between the rival groups.
"There's been tight security around the area so as to prevent anything that would turn, you know, degenerate. There have been attempts to get the local leaders and tribal leaders to get together and re-initiate talks."
