The Papua New Guinea Prime Minister may be asked to step down as leader of the National Alliance Party today.

The Post Courier is reporting that Sir Michael Somare will be asked to step down as party leader, and ultimately as Prime Minister.

Government insiders and at least two senior government ministers have told the newspaper the question will be put to Sir Michael when the party's parliamentary caucus meets.

The sources say the discussion will press for changes to the party leadership to avert a possible vote-of-no-confidence.

The senior ministers say the meeting is crucial because if Sir Michael does not accept the changes, then the formation of a new Government is imminent.
