The Solomon Islands Electoral Commission says almost 300 candidates have been confirmed to contest next month's national general election.

SIBC reports a total of 294 candidates have been confirmed to contest 28 constituencies.

However, 20 constituencies are yet to confirm their lists, which could bring the total number of candidates to a record high.

The Electoral Office is still to get lists from the remaining constituencies, but so far Central Honiara has received the highest number of candidates at 23.

The constituencies yet to send in their candidate lists include some in Malaita, Western, and Temotu, and all the constituencies on Guadalcanal and Rennell-Bellona provinces.
