Hawaii Christians hail civil union veto

1:06 pm on 9 July 2010

The Hawaii Christian Coalition says it's elated by the Governor's decision to veto a civil unions bill.

The Governor of the US state, Linda Lingle says the issue should now be put to voters on a ballot paper, so it can be decided by the public and not politicians.

Garret Hashimoto, the chairman of the Hawaii Christian Coalition, says he believes voters will reject civil unions because the majority do not support it.

He says the same sex issue is not about civil rights

"These are people who practice same sex behaviour, no different from smokers, drinkers etc. So they want to classify this as a civil right then I don't see it, I see it as a behavioural right that they are fighting for."

Garret Hashimoto says he believes marriage is between one man and one woman.
