PNG 2010 census put off to next July

6:27 pm on 8 July 2010

Papua New Guinea's census has now been deferred to July the 10th next year.

The Post Courier reports the Planning and District Development Minister Paul Tiensten as saying the planned census date of July 11th this year is not achievable.

The Minister says a population and housing census is the single most extensive operation that a country undertakes.

He says this includes the comprehensive listing of households and mapping of census units, which is not fully completed.

Mr Tiensten says the other outstanding task is the printing of census questionnaires which is massive.

He says it would take 20 weeks to print and train staff.
