In a breakthrough for farmers, the first taro shipment from Samoa to New Zealand in almost 20 years has been cleared by quarantine officials.
The Samoa Observer reports Acting Principal Development Officer for the Agricultural Division, Pueata Tanielu, as saying Samoan farmers have been waiting for this for a long time.
Mr Tanielu says there is a huge market in New Zealand for the local crop.
However, they are still awaiting more news of the shipment from the private exporter who was in charge of the shipment.
The exporter was Lomia Penisula Reuelu of P and A trading, who says they are still awaiting for a full update, but the most important part is making it past New Zealand quarantine.
If the shipment is successful the greatest challenge would be meeting an ever increasing demand in the New Zealand market.
