CNMI governor to sign nuclear power bill into law

12:56 pm on 6 July 2010

The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands is considering the use of nuclear power to end persistent problems with local electricity generation.

The Governor Benigno Fitial says he is amenable to signing into law a bill to allow a small modular nuclear power reactor to be built in the CNMI, as part of his administration's push for the use of eco-friendly and alternative sources of energy.

Our correspondent, Mark Rabago, says the bill introduced by Representative Stanley Torres has been passed in the House.

"The power company came here last April and Hyperion Power was pitching the modular reactor. Partly because they heard about what's happening with the island; such a small population and having trouble with the power generation."

Mark Rabago says the bill is now awaiting action by the Senate.
