Outcome of Sevele's Forum mission to Suva unclear

The outcome of the weekend visit to Fiji by the chair of the Pacific Islands Forum Ministerial Contact Group is still unclear.

Tonga's Prime Minister, Dr Feleti Sevele, went to Suva with the intention of meeting with the Fiji interim leader, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, but there are no indications a meeting took place.

The Contact Group was invited to Fiji last month but that invitation was withdrawn by Commodore Bainimarama who took offence at comments the Group's members made following a meeting in Auckland.

Dr Sevele said earlier that it was important that the lines of communication are kept open.

He did meet the interim Fiji Foreign Minister, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola, but no details have been released about what was discussed.

Dr Sevele is now back in Tonga and is yet to comment.

Officials at the Pacific Islands Forum secretariat, which acknowledges that the meeting was a formal attempt to re-open discussions with the Fiji leadership, are not available for comment.
