Solomons election process officially launched

7:33 pm on 22 June 2010

The Solomon Islands election date has been officially confirmed as August the 4th when voters will choose a 50-member parliament for a four-year term.

The announcement has opened a two-week period for candidates to register.

The chairman of the electoral commission, Sir Peter Kenilorea, says new laws have tightened the election process by imposing heavier penalties for those caught trying to cheat.

But Sir Peter concedes that the election campaign spending of the candidates is too difficult to control.

"We'll continue, as we have in the past, depend on their integrity and on trust because we do not have any administrative structure to actually check on the expenditure of all candidates."
