Solomons government looks into airport closure

9:19 am on 15 June 2010

A group from the Solomon Islands government has gone to Rennell and Bellona Province to discuss issues surrounding the closure of the Tinngoa airstrip.

SIBC reports the group includes an officer from the Minister of Lands, the chief air traffic officer and the Premier of the province

The closure of the Tinngoa Airstrip over the past weeks has been associated with disputes over land ownership.

The Ministry of Aviation's Permanent Secretary, Jeffrey Wickham says the Ministry is concerned with the upkeep of facilities and infrastructure at the airport.

He says they would like to resolve the problems to ensure they don't affect air transport to Rennell and Bellona in the future.

But he says it is important to discuss the problem but to allow services to continue.
