Vanuatu Parliamentary session put off after MPs fail to turn up

9:18 am on 15 June 2010

The Speaker of the Vanuatu Parliament, Georges Wells, adjourned Tuesday's sitting because only 24 of the 52 MPs turned up.

The extra-ordinary session will resume on Thursday.

The MPs are expected to debate a bill to abolish the Vanuatu Commodities Marketing Board, after allegations of the misuse of public funds by politicians and staff at the statutory body.

MPs are also expected to discuss a Coroner's Report, written by a New Zealand judge, which was highly critical of policing practices in Vanuatu and recommended the Government make sweeping changes.
