Hundreds of endangered fruit bats or fanihis have been killed by poachers on Rota island in the Northern Marianas in the past two years.

The fanihis are only found in the Marianas and Guam and the CNMI Division of Fish and Wildlife says an estimated 400, or one sixth of the population have been killed in that time.

The agency fears they could be wiped out if the poaching continues.
