A police officer from the Solomon Islands Police Force is dead after being stabbed in Honiara last night.
The Police Commissioner, Peter Marshall, says the attack appears to be a random incident and the officer was off duty at the time.
"He got into a taxi. There was an altercation between the taxi driver and the police officer which resulted in the off duty police officer receiving a stab to his heart. It looks as though a screwdriver was involved and the police officer died almost immediately."
Commissioner Marshall says police worked throughout the night and a taxi driver is now being questioned.
He says the 31-year old father from Rennell Bellona will be missed by his team members from the Explosives Ordinance Division which secures thousands of munitions remaining from the Second World War.
