US Coast Guard inspects American Samoa's MV Sili vessel again

10:51 am on 3 June 2010

The United States Coast Guard is inspecting the MV Sili today after an initial inspection last Friday and did not give the vessel passing marks.

Lt Ted Harre, who heads the Coast Guard Marne Detachment unit in Pago Pago, said there were still major issues with the vessel's fire detection system and other key safety areas.

He said the smoke and fire detection systems were still inoperable and he was giving Port Administration more time to correct the deficiencies and inspect the vessel again.

Lt Harre said it's clear that the government did a lot of work on the vessel but unfortunately from what he saw of the vessel, he was not able to certify the MV Sili.
