American Samoa eyes foreign job market

American Samoa is looking at placing unemployed workers with employers in other countries.

The Governor, Togiola Tulafono, says a programme has been discussed that would set up an office to oversee employment services, which could outsource local workers to places like Guam, New Zealand and Australia.

While American Samoa has seen massive job losses, he says there are a lot of opportunities available in Guam, with the US military build-up providing hundreds of jobs in the construction industry.

Togiola also says there are temporary employment opportunities available in New Zealand as fruit pickers.

He says agriculture in the US mainland also has similar temporary jobs for harvesters.
