Indonesia deports two French journalists from Papua

12:48 pm on 26 May 2010

Authorities in the Indonesian Province of Papua are deporting two French journalists for violating their permits.

The head of the Jayapura immigration office, Robert Silitonga, says the journalists, Baudoin Koenig and Carol Helene Lorthiois of Mano Mano TV Arte were arrested for covering a rally in front of the Papuan legislative building.

Ms Lorthiois had entered Indonesia on a tourism visa.

Mr Koenig had a permit issued last month by the Tourism and Cultural Ministry in Jakarta to cover parts of the country, including Papua but not Jayapura.

Mr Silitonga says this restricted Mr Koenig to making a documentary on the future of Indonesia.

Mr Silitonga says the French nationals are to flown to Jakarta to be deported and will be blacklisted.
