Continuing leadership claim may force court proceedings in Vanuatu

The lawyer for Vanuatu's biggest political party says there'll be pressure to bring forward legal proceedings if the Prime Minister's rival Harry Iauko insists on claiming leadership of the Vanuaaku Pati.

Parliament's Speaker has asked all 52 MPs, including the Prime Minister Edward Natapei and Mr Iauko, to declare their political affiliation following the ongoing claims.

An action was filed last week in the Supreme Court over the disagreement and VP's lawyer Edward Nalyal says parliament may have to adjourn further while the court sorts it out.

"If Mr Harry Iauko declares that he is President of the Vanuaaku Pati then my client will need to have an urgent hearing of the claim that I have filed on their behalf to seek a declaration that Mr Iauko is not President of the Vanuaaku Pati."

The Vanuaaku Pati lawyer Edward Nalyal says there's been no response from Mr Iauko regarding the filing of court proceedings.

Vanuatu's Parliament has been adjourned until Wednesday.
