Special taskforce set up in Fiji to investigate alleged plot against Commissioner

A special taskforce has been set up in Fiji to investigate an alleged plot to to remove the police commissioner from his post.

Two former senior police officers appeared in court in Suva last week, on charges of conspiring to commit a felony, namely mutiny , and pleaded not guilty.

Megan Whelan reports from Fiji.

"The taskforce, led by Superintendent Waisea Tabakau, is reported by Fiji village to have so far interviewed more than thirty people."

More are expected to be questioned soon in relation to the alleged plot to remove commodore Esala Teleni from his position as the Police Commissioner.

Both men, the former director of the Intelligence Special Branch, and a former assistant commissioner of police, were remanded in custody.

They will re-appear for a bail application to be heard today.
