The French authorities have seized computers of the Tahiti-based correspondent of the AFP news agency as part of a defamation probe.

The journalist, Mike Leyral, is suspected to have information about defamatory comments about Yves Haupert, who is the head of the French Polynesia's public broadcaster, TNTV.

Mr Leyral also works at TNTV where police carried out a search and seized his computer.

They also accompanied Mr Leyral to his home where the took his personal computers.

Mr Leyral says as far as he knows it is the first time that a broadcaster in French Polynesia had its premises searched as part of an investigation into alleged defamation.

The case is reportedly related to a satirical blog running a spoof of Mr Haupert.
