An extension to Tonga's prison is about to be completed, with inmates expected to move in on June the 1st.
Matangi Tonga reports that two blocks are being added to the Hu'atolitoli Prison at a cost of half a million US dollars.
The Superintendent of Prisons, Sione Falemanu, says the new compounds will be safer, cleaner and more hygienic compared to the existing old wooden huts situated inside a barbed wire fence.
Mr Falemanu says the jail will meet the United Nations Minimum Standard Rules for Treatment of Prisons, which Tonga is bound to.
He also says the new prison is needed because of overcrowding.
