Housing assistance scheme in Fiji will not go ahead

A government-funded plan to give first home builders in Fiji financial assistance won't go ahead, until prices in the under-investigation hardware sector are regulated.

Fiji's Attorney General and Minister for Trade and Industry, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, has told Fiji Live the government will wait for the Commerce Commission to complete its investigation over price collusion in the sector.

He said the government still wants to move ahead with the housing assistance scheme and make more information available to those who qualify.

The government allocated just over five million US dollars for the scheme in the 2010 Budget, with plans to give first time home builders just over 5,000 US dollars each.
