The Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency has begun a workshop in Fiji to train personnel as fish export officers and inspectors.
17 people will be trained for three weeks in issues about safety of seafood exports as required for what is known in the European Union as a Competent Authority.
Such an authority is an independent government-based body responsible for controlling the standard of seafood exported through inspections and audits.
Countries without a Competent Authority cannot export fish to the EU.
Fiji and Papua New Guinea both have a Competent Authority.
