Lack of Nauru parliamentary elections keeps caretaker government in place

Nauru's caretaker government is still in place following parliament's failure this morning to elect a new president, speaker and deputy.

Last Saturday's general election, called by the President a year early in response to repeated bids by the Opposition to lodge votes of no confidence in his administration, returned all 18 members of parliament to their seats.

The government information office's spokesperson, Joanna Olsson, says parliament sat for 20 minutes this morning before adjourning until next Tuesday.
