In American Samoa, Pago Pago International Airport now has an Automated Weather Observation System which will enable pilots to obtain the most up to date weather information for landings and departures.
Pilots can tune into a frequency to get the latest information on wind direction and speed, rainfall, temperature, visibility and cloud coverage.
The Federal Aviation Administration funded the design and purchase of the system to the tune of 400,000 US dollars.
The installation phase was completed this week by PPG Consultants.
The Deputy Director of Port, Peter Lefiti, says it is now testing the system.
At present pilots obtain weather information from the Faleolo air traffic control tower in Samoa but the information is sometime several hours old.
