A type of wasp has been blamed for the decline in coral or gao gao trees in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

An entomologist, Dr Marisol Quintanilla, from the Northern Marianas' College, says controlling the pest with chemicals can be costly.

Dr Quintanilla says he has noticed a decline of gao gao trees and says it's is a very unfortunate event.

At the same time Saipan has been having problems with the invasive vine scarlet gourd.
