American Samoa machete attacker officially detained

11:24 am on 21 April 2010

A federal judge in Honolulu has signed an order detaining an American Samoan man accused of assaulting an official with a machete.

During an earlier hearing, the court verbally granted federal prosecutors' motion to detain Simeti Lualemana without bail while the official order was pending.

The order now states the government has shown by evidence that Mr Lualemana committed a crime of violence and by clear and convincing evidence, the defendant presents a danger to other persons and the community.

Lualemana's attorney said she planned to file a motion seeking his release on bail.
